Woodpeckers are small to medium-sized birds with chisel-like beaks, short legs, stiff tails and long tongues used for capturing insects. They live in forests and wooded areas and eat insects, sap, fruit, nuts and seeds.  They are notoriously difficult to photograph because you only know they are around by the sound of their incessant drumming usually against tree trunks.  Drumming up to 20 times per second, the movement is usually captured as a blur. There are 16 species of woodpecker in Kenya.
